Julie Munns Lawn Care Tips - Lawn Maintenance

Lawn Maintenance

Fertilising your lawn
Correct fertilising procedures are necessary to keep your lawn healthy and green throughout the year.  Reduced growth and paleness of colour are two of the main symptoms of poor nutrition in a lawn.  Turf will look sparse and weak.  Application of a balanced fertiliser is the simplest way to manage turf nutrition, supplying the turf with adequate levels of all nutrients.  Fertilizing is also the easiest way of controlling weeds in lawns.

The following fertilising times are recommended as a guide only as many factors can affect the amount of fertiliser required , e.g. soil conditions, frequency of watering, area, type of lawn etc.  Also fertilisers will tend to leach out of sandy soils more quickly than clay soils.

You should give your lawn a thorough soaking on the preceding day.  Then, after making sure that the grass blades are dry, apply your fertiliser as evenly as possible, either by hand or with a spreader, at the recommended rate.  The fertiliser should be watered in thoroughly after application.  This will allow the roots to absorb the fertiliser more readily and prevent grass and root burn.

Don’t fertilise your lawn with sulphate of ammonia as this will only increase top growth, meaning extra mowing, reducing root development and weakening your lawn.
Choose a well balanced N.P.K fertilier such as Munns Golf Course Green, Buffalo Booster or Buffalo Green.
