Julie Munns Lawn Care Tips - Weed Control in Lawns
Weed control in lawns
Weedicides work more effectively when the plant is growing vigorously. If you have not fed the lawn in the past 6 – 8 weeks, it is advisable to fertilise it prior to spraying. Fertilisers strengthen lawns, opens the pores on the leaf to allow for better absorption from contact sprays. You should wait 10 – 15 days after fertilising then spray the appropriate weedicide at the recommended dosages.
Tips for controlling broadleaf weeds
Make sure that you thoroughly spray all surfaces of the weed. Don’t spray in windy conditions. Early morning or late afternoon spraying minimizes the hazard to bees. Don’t spray in wet conditions as the rain may lessen the effectiveness of the weedicide.
Always follow the manufacturers directions, store chemicals safely, ensure adequate ventilation when mixing and note the appropriate first aid measures.
Don’t mow weeds for 48 hours prior to spraying and don’t water for 8 hours before or after spraying.
Do not apply any broadleaf weed control until the lawn is at least 3 months old.
Use Munns Bindii and Broadleaf Weed Killer .
Toadstools & fairy rings
Poor drainage, decomposing material under the soil and over – thatched lawns are generally the cause of toadstools and fairy rings. If the problem is caused by rotting matter beneath the soil , the problem will eventually disappear once this has decomposed. However, if you want to correct the problem immediately, you will need to remove the debris and affected soil and renovate the area. Please see Scarifying section for heavily thatched lawns.
