Lawn Care and Garden Tips
Mowing procedures
Mowing frequency can be just as important as the cutting height in the overall physiological and developmental condition of the turf grass plant. The mowing frequency is determined by the shoot growth rate, environmental conditions and cutting height.
New Lawns
Should be mown when seedlings are about 5 – 6 cm high, even if this entails only partial mowing of the area. Remove only about 1cm from the tips.
Established Lawns
Mowing height is an important factor in promoting healthy lawns. No more than 30 – 40% of the leaf area should be removed at any one mowing. The greater the percentage of leaf removal, the greater root growth stoppage occurs.
Lawns that have been cut too low will have less ability to withstand stress. Irrigation and fertilising must take place more frequently and disease problems tend to increase.
After establishment, mowing should take place on a regular basis as this, together with correct watering and fertilising, will encourage vigorous and healthy growth of your lawns.
Keep mower blades sharp. Don’t cut wet grass.
General Mowing Heights
For cool season lawns: Mowing height in Summer should be approx 5 -6 cm and 3 cm in Winter. Warm season grasses should be kept approx 1 – 2 cm all year round. Do not cut couch grasses in Winter, except to remove sour sobs or winter weed growth.
Do’s and Dont's of Watering
Different lawn types have different water requirements. For instance, hardy warm season lawns such as Munns Pooch Couch, Emerald Kikuyu and Buffalo require less watering than cool season lawns. Many people fail to recognize that it is necessary to water cool season lawns during dry periods in the cooler months, whereas warm season grasses do not need watering as this is their dormant period.
Please Note: A newly planted lawn will take up to 12 months before it has established a deep enough root system to achieve its maximum drought tolerance. Therefore, your lawn will require more watering during its first Summer, to enable it to develop to the fullest drought resistance potential.
Do
Water your lawns in the early morning. Ideally, lawns should be watered in the early mornings and up to midday, as water evaporation from the leaf is quite rapid.
Do
Give your lawn longer, less frequent watering. Deeply penetrating irrigations that wet the soil to a considerable depth encourage deep rooting and result in a more vigorous, higher quality turf.
Do
Use wetting agents such as Munns Weta-Lawn and garden. This product traps moisture in the soil so it takes longer for the soil to dry out.
Don’t
Give your lawn short frequent waterings. Short frequent waterings throughout hot weather will cause many lawn problems such as shallow rooting of the lawn, weed invasion, leaching of soil nutrients and fungus diseases.
Do
Install rain water tanks and look at underground irrigation.
Check your local government website for current water restrictions.
Position
Roses love a sunny spot to produce beautiful and prolific blooms.
Soil Preparation
Before planting dig Munns Organic Garden Booster into the soil. If the soil is acid, add garden lime.
Fertilising
Roses should be fertilized during their growing season. September to April.
Use Munns Beta Bloom as directed. This can also be used on potted roses.
